Yeah the theme I have in mind is creepy crawler things: worms, bugs, slugs, SPIDERS!
not so much bones, caskets, zombies...

Ok. Scrap version 2 of the Menu... lol Living on the other side of this planet makes communication a little awkward... Not the distance... The time zones...
I have another idea... (It's just gone 8am - a small chuckle is acceptable) Are you able to sketch the type of menu that you would like?... No. You do not need to be as artistic as Van Gough... but I draw the line at crayons (no pun intended)... Accuracy is not important. Layout or style would be best. I would do it myself, except that my clairvoyance skills, are somewhat on the fritz... lol
I do like the new font... I have even added it to my system fonts... lol
Have a great weekend... as such, I will not be expecting a response, until at least Monday... lol

Cool menu. Fits the style of the game and is not over-complicated. Nice job. Did not expect the "gong" at the end of the first level... but I was ready for it at the end... lol
I am still amazed by the code used to draw the critters... Very cool...
Am I detecting a trend in recreating the 'classics'? lol

Thanks johnno56 your feed back and help most appreciated I am thinking that I had more control over spiders legs, just need to track switch positions on each spider. It's been years since I wrote code to draw the things. I will review that and clean up code from old artifacts of JB translation and comments.

I dug up an old Naalaa version of arkanoid/breakout. Didn't try a conversion back then as It used a Tilemap editor library to place the bricks and to perform collision detection. Thought I would give it another bash and instead of trying to convert the library, I figured I would try the "old school" method. Reading text-based map files. So far so good. Loading and reading the map files seem to work... Collision detection and main game play is next... I hope... If it works I will post a link. If it doesn't then I will just chalk it up to experience... Could be fun...
Any ideas for the next project? I do like shooters... Some 'thinking' shooters are ok... Like Scorched Earth... A bit beyond my skill-set... Well, actually... well beyond... lol A version of Battlezone would be nice... I am not familiar with vector graphics but could be nice challenge. For me, anything that uses a joystick, but a lot of people don't use them... Ray casting is another thing I like... What about a method of creating "mini-map" inset for space shooters etc... This is too much thinking for me... As you could probably tell from my babbling on again... lol It's been 6 hours since my last coffee....

Just checked Arkanoid breakout, oh yes! it would be more interesting with different brick layouts specially away from back wall for more pin ball action when ball gets behind first layer and starts bouncing off top edge!
Battlezone looks like wire frame graphics, too much work ;-))
I am getting interested in problem of drawing 8 legs with 3 joints in each eg, how to wiggle the 2 joint in the 3rd leg. I was studying spider anatomy yesterday and was totally creeped out when I went to bed.

I have successfully used "old school" to select the starting level... and that's as far as I can go... I suppose Naalaa had a reason for having a Tilemap library... Trying to replicate the basic function of the library is a coding minefield... well for me anyway... I think I may have discovered why I dropped the idea some years back... lol Oh well. Worth a shot...
The best part of your breakout, in my opinion, is the fact that 'everything' is 'drawn'. Sure it's a lot more work but think of the space saving... eg: How many bytes are used in drawing a rectangle as opposed to loading a rectangular sprite? The bigger the sprite the more memory to use. The 'line' command uses the same amount of memory regardless of the size of the rectangle. eg: a yellow 640x480 filled sprite uses about 2.1k. How much memory would 'line(0,0)-step(640,480),_rgb32(255,255,0),bf' take? Maybe 50bytes? Ha. 7:15am... One coffee down and still rambling on... I surprise myself at times... lol
Battlezone. I have wondered several times in the past whether or not it would be possible to recreate the game in Basic. As I never got into vector (wireframe) graphics, I usually would put it into the 'too hard basket'... and move on. I remembered how slow it was in the arcades but couldn't understand why... Machine hardware and software have advanced leaps and bounds since then... as a result, I moved the conversion into the 'What if' basket...
I am totally convinced that another coffee will do wonders... Oh. Not in trying to figure out what to do next... Perhaps helping me not to fall asleep on my keyboard... lol
I'm not even going down the path of spiders... Just thinking about them creates urges to reach for bug spray or a rolled up newspaper....
Time for a quick coffee before my daily bike ride to pickup groceries - before it rains... Have a great day.
